There is snow on the ground and it's bitterly cold in Nebraska but I am basking in the glow of a fabulous spa weekend at the Montage resort in Laguna Beach, California.
There was plenty of this.
And this.
And this.
But I also had the opportunity to burn some calories. The resort has a beautiful and well equipped fitness center. They offer a complete schedule of classes including Pilates, yoga and a class I just HAD to try called SurfSet.
It's Baywatch Boot Camp on a surfboard, combining cardio and strength routines set to Beach Boys music and the theme from Hawaii Five-O.
The surfboards are set up on balls so they constantly shift back and forth. We ran and jumped over or onto the board and did a variety of planks, push-ups, yoga positions and surfing moves. It's a great core workout because you're always off balance.
Thankfully, the boards faced away from a wall of mirrors so I didn't have to see how silly I looked. Then there's the location with a view of the swimming pool and the ocean. (Not bad, especially since I'm right now looking out my office window at falling snow.)
I usually try to get some kind of exercise when I'm on vacation but usually that amounts to the treadmill in the workout room. This class was fun and a way to try something new and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
